> **Key takeaways**
>
> * Save a YouTube video or Shorts page from the Beav extension and an entry awaiting confirmation appears in your knowledge base. In the desktop app, pick a maximum of 360p, 720p or 1080p, review the points quote and confirm, and the video downloads to your computer.
> * Once the file is local you can preview it and it is transcribed automatically. **Decompose** gives you a topic, structure template, per-shot script and timed transcript, and copies clips and keyframes to the asset library.
> * **AI rewrite** opens a new chat with the video as a reference, which is handy for turning an idea into content for your own audience. Rewriting means learning the structure, not copying the video.

YouTube is where a lot of creators go looking for ideas. The usual routine is a downloader for the file and a chatbot for a summary. You end up with an MP4 in one place, a chat log in another, and the title, description and source somewhere else. If you want to study the cuts, you still have to scrub through it yourself.

Beav joins those steps into one path: **the video is saved to a knowledge base on your computer with its title, description and thumbnail, decomposed into structure and clips you can reuse, and then used as a reference for your own piece**.

## Who it is for

* Creators and editors who find ideas on YouTube and adapt them for another language or market.
* Anyone studying the pacing of Shorts to make vertical videos for other platforms.
* Teams who want overseas references and their own material in the same library.

## Step 1: Save it to your computer

Install the Beav desktop app and the browser extension, and check that the extension shows as connected. [Tutorial 02](https://beav.pro/en/blog/tutorials/install-beav-browser-extension) covers the setup.

![Four steps: save from the video page with the extension, choose a quality and confirm points in the app, wait for download and transcription, then decompose or rewrite](https://beav.pro/blog/features/youtube-save-breakdown-rewrite-steps-en.webp)

*Save with the extension, confirm quality and points in the app, let the video land locally, then decompose and rewrite.*

1. **Save from a video or Shorts page.** Open the video in Chrome or Edge on your computer and save it from the extension popup or side panel. The extension asks you to confirm in the desktop app, and an entry awaiting download confirmation appears in the knowledge base with the title, description and thumbnail.
2. **Choose a quality and review the quote.** The confirmation dialog offers a maximum of 360p (**Fastest**), 720p (**Recommended**) or 1080p (**Larger file**) and shows the points quote for this download. At the time of writing, the docs list 15 points for regular accounts and 9 for members; the amount in the dialog is what counts. If the source has no stream at your limit, Beav takes the best one below it. Cancel if you are not ready; the entry stays and you can confirm later.
3. **Let the download finish.** Your computer downloads the video. Cards and details show the percentage and speed for the video and audio files separately, followed by merging and saving, so one file at 100% does not mean the whole task is done.
4. **Check and preview.** Once the video is saved locally you can preview it, and it is transcribed automatically.

One thing to know about cost: &#x2A;*the points are charged as soon as the video lookup succeeds, and they are not refunded if the download then fails.** A failed entry can be retried, and you get a new confirmation before each new lookup.

Away from your desk? Submit the YouTube link through [phone and computer pairing](https://beav.pro/en/blog/tutorials/beav-phone-computer-transfer&#x29;, or paste it under &#x2A;*+** > **Add link** in the knowledge base. Both create the same pending entry for you to confirm on the computer.

## Step 2: Decompose it

When the video is on disk, open its details and click **Decompose**. If you ticked **Decompose after saving** in the extension, decomposition starts on its own once the download finishes.

![What decomposing a YouTube video gives you: topic, structure template, per-shot script and timed transcript, plus keyframes, shot clips and audio cues in the asset library](https://beav.pro/blog/features/youtube-save-breakdown-rewrite-outputs-en.webp)

*Text results stay with the entry; clips and keyframes are copied to the asset library.*

The result shows a topic, structure template, shots, a per-shot shooting script and a timed transcript, and the topic is added to the topic center. Click a shot thumbnail or timestamp to jump there in the video. If a cut is off, merge the shot into the previous one or split at the playhead, and the next decomposition keeps your cuts. The transcript, keyframes, shot MP4 clips and audio cues are copied to `decompositions/<title>` in the asset library.

Decomposition runs transcription, chat and video-understanding models and uses model quota, which is separate from the points spent on the download. For more detail, see [how to break down a video shot by shot](https://beav.pro/en/blog/features/video-breakdown-shot-script).

## Step 3: Rewrite it

Click **AI rewrite** at the top right of the details. Beav opens a new chat with a prefilled rewriting prompt, a reference to this video and the rewriting skill selected. Nothing is sent until you press send, so add your own brief first.

With YouTube material, the common move is a change of language or setting. For example: "Keep the question in the first three seconds and the problem, demo, verdict order. Make it a one-minute talking-head video in Mandarin for office workers in China." When the language changes, subtitles, dialogue and any text on screen need to change with it. Numbers and results from the original are not facts about your product, so bring your own sources. Rewriting uses the chat model.

## How it compares with the usual tools

For offline viewing, Premium is the easiest. For bulk downloads or higher resolutions, yt-dlp and similar tools are more flexible and usually free. To find out quickly what a video says, asking an AI is fastest. Beav is for the case where you want to take the video apart, make your own version, and keep the material and its source in one library.

## Limits and notes

* Every download needs a confirmation in the desktop app, and quality tops out at 1080p. This flow does not fetch YouTube's own subtitles; the text comes from local transcription. Earlier records and subtitles remain readable.
* In the **Download from Links** tool, YouTube links can only be saved to the knowledge base, not packaged to this computer.
* Points are charged when the lookup succeeds and are not refunded if the download fails. Decomposition and rewriting use model quota on top of that.
* Saved videos are for study and research. Get the creator's permission before cutting them into your own work, reposting or using them commercially.
